If your pet gets sprayed by a skunk, it can be a challenging endeavor to remove the scent! But with these steps, you can help remove the skunk spray and reduce odor:

  1. Try to keep them contained in one area of the house, preferably one without carpet and furniture.
  2. Make the mixture below, or use a Skunk-Off Shampoo if you have one.
  3. Also, some groomers will accept skunked pets for grooming – it may be worth calling around.
  4. Depending on how badly your pet was skunked, you may need to give multiple baths.
  5. Also, keep in mind, skunk spray can seep into your pet’s pores, and the smell can resurface with humidity and damp weather.

RECIPE:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3% - 1 quart
  • Baking Soda – ¼ cup
  • Dawn Liquid Dish Soap – 2 tsp
  • +/- Listerine mouth wash to help add a pleasant mint odor

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • If eye exposure occurs, use saline or water to flush the eyes.
  • If they become red, swollen, squinty, or irritated, please call your vet!
  • Do not pre-mix the ingredients, keep separate until needed.
  • Double or triple the recipe for larger dogs.

STEPS FOR BATHING:

  • Mix ingredients together, it will fizz!
  • Soak fur with the mixture, and lather.
  • AVOID THE EYES – use a sponge to clean the head/around eyes, very carefully
  • Let the mixture soak on your pet for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
