What Is Laser Therapy?

laserLaser Therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free, surgery-free, and drug-free treatment that provides pain relief, reduces inflammation, and improves overall recovery from a variety of pet ailments.

Hampton Veterinary Hospital offers Companion Laser Therapy to our pet clients. This innovative treatment has no side effects, can be used in conjunction with other medical procedures, and is a good alternative or supplement to prescription drugs or surgery.

The Hampton team uses this scientifically proven practice on pets to treat post-surgical pain as well as a number of acute and chronic conditions:

  • Sprains, strains, and fractures
  • Infections and Inflammation
  • Bites, Cuts, and Abrasions
  • Arthritis and Tendonitis

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Laser therapy uses deep-penetrating light energy to activate a positive cellular response that stimulates your pet’s body to heal itself.

Laser therapy is an effective treatment option for dogs and cats that can accelerate your pet's healing process after surgery, or as a part of rehabilitation. Here's what you can expect from your pet's laser therapy:

Laser therapy uses a deep-penetrating light to enact a process called photobiostimulation that stimulates injured cells to heal faster and triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, helping relieve pain. Treatments are painless and generally last between five and 10 minutes. And since the treatment is non-invasive, there is rarely a need for sedation or other medications. During the procedure, protective glasses may be worn by both pets and humans to protect their eyes from the laser beam. Laser therapy can be an incredibly useful treatment, helping accelerate your pet's healing process, getting your pet back to normal quicker and with less pain. Let us know if you have any questions. We're always here to help!

A sterile, non-invasive wand is used during treatment and most pets relax and remain comfortable once the laser therapy begins. In some cases, angry cats start purring and some dogs even fall asleep during the sessions!

Depending on your pet’s medical needs, laser therapy treatment only takes a few minutes to complete and relief from pain is almost immediate.

Does My Pet Need Laser Therapy?

Older pets with musculoskeletal conditions can benefit from laser therapy because it helps ease stiffness and pain and improves overall mobility and function.

Pets experiencing pain and inflammation from a sprain, wound, or even a tooth extraction are also good candidates for a laser therapy session. Here are some signs that your pet may be experiencing pain or discomfort:

  • Difficulty going up or down stairs or climbing into car
  • Abnormal sitting posture
  • Circling multiple times before lying down
  • Whining, groaning or other vocalizations
  • Sudden limping or mobility impairment
  • Lack of grooming
  • Restlessness or changes in personality
  • Licking or biting affected area
  • Lack of appetite
